Are you only seeing what you want to see?

Oh! What a Wonderful World... The song by Louis Armstrong is one of my favorites.
But, is the world really so beautiful as Louis claims?
The World... as we know it, as we perceive it; is largely shaped by what we expect, what we desire, or what we (subconsciously) want to see.
But why do we see only what we want to see? Should we not use information and logic to process the sensory information?
The answer to that question lies deep-down in the recesses of the brain.
Your brain has one job - To process information efficiently.
To do so, your beautiful brain accesses past experiences, uses belief systems, calibrates with the morals, adds a dash of color with the cultural nuances, adjusts the emotional response systems and produces an outcome.
This, in a way, is a shortcut, the brain uses, to reach an outcome that is comprehensible, decipherable and "NORMAL" for you.
This "NORMAL" is different for different people. Same set of information, will produce absolutely unique set of results for each human being.
In this case, what I am referring to as Outcome, is nothing but how you perceive the reality.
Something which is absolutely pleasant for you, can elicit fear in another person sitting next to you. Clearly, this has the potential to wreck havoc in your career, relationships and even in your day to day functioning.
You might ask, is it possible to escape this trap and experience reality the way it is?
YES... you absolutely can!
Let me warn you... it's an uphill journey. There is no formula or magic wand that you can wave, to escape this trap; but you can begin with a few things.
Number 1 || Living in the present and Living in the question.
What does that mean?
It means, the past does not cast a shadow on your present day choices or decisions or actions. Now, I want you to know, I do not say this from a place of dismissing past experiences and throwing caution to the wind. What I am emphasizing on is... DO NOT stay stuck in the past.
If one investment tanked, does not mean all future investments will do poorly.
If one relationship did not work, does not mean the next one will not be joyful.
If one career choice went awry, does not mean you are destined to fail.
When you realize, you are going back to your patterns of overcalculation and predictions of present and future based on the past... ask a question.
Educate yourself, seek additional information and let the truth (without the bias of the brain) guide you. Questions are a great way to circumvent patters and eliminate bias in your thought process.
Number 2 || LET-GO of everything that does not work for you
This will take strong will and resolve.
No matter how vital and significant you have conditioned your brain to belief it is; learn to let-go. This can be as big as a rigid belief system or it can be as small as, the way you learnt to organize your TO-DO list.
How do you go about it?
Identify one thing that is extremely vital for you but never seems to enable you... weighs you down, constantly tires you, induces additional struggle instead of ease.
Ask yourself - What will happen if I no longer had to conform to this or What will happen if this no longer existed in my life?
Write down at least three scenarios... Sense the relief.
Now, take the action ... no matter how painful it might be.
Move On to the next one... and the next one...and the next one... till the time, no more self-imposed limitations exist.
Number 3 || Demand more... from life and from yourself!
This will take every ounce of courage you have.
Playing safe and predictable will give you more of the same - same present, same future, same incremental financial growth, same, same, same.
When was the last time, you did something for the first time? What possibilities are you avoiding, rejecting and refusing to consider?
Can you hear your brain whisper - "C'mon! Let's be realistic"?
If YES, go back to Number 1
If NO, make a list of at least three things that will hit the ball out of the park for you.
Notice, with the diminished sense of gloom, doom, impossibility, you get to see the glimmer of something different possible for you!
I am not expecting this to totally vanish overnight and hence used "diminished" but if you keep at it, it will definitely open up greater and greater options for you.
Are you still, only seeing what you want to see?
Or what you need to see?
What are you unwilling to see?
